Following the success of The World in 100 Objects, the British Museum is now highlighting London: A World City in 20 objects.
One of the top 20 objects, chosen by Venetia Porter, the museum's curator responsible for Islamic art, is this Iznik pottery basin, on display in Room 34. Iznik was popular in England from Elizabethan times, and it is speculated that this might have been a foot basin like the ones mentioned in the Ottoman treasury at the time of Elizabeth I’s contemporary ruler, Süleyman 'the Magnificent'.
